Dandelions

Who doesn’t know this ‘sun-loving’ little flower? Native to Europe, Asia and USA, dandelions (Taraxacum Officinale) will soon carpet just about anywhere there’s an exposed piece of ground. In fact, plant pots, pavements, walls…they’ll grow just about anywhere. Dandelions have a reputation for being one of the healthiest, most useful plants for the human body and they’re right outside your door. All parts of the plant are edible, the leaves can be used in salads and the flower can be used as a tea or made into a flower jelly, but it’s the root which contains most of the medicine. It has many beneficial compounds which, after research, have been scientifically proven to be very good for health.

- Numerous studies from around the world have shown results which would suggest dandelion root has potent anti-cancer properties. One study from Canada found that dandelion root extract started killing cancer cells within 48 hours of treatment. Another study, published in ‘Oncotarget’, a peer-reviewed cancer research journal, showed that root extract was able to kill 95% of colon cancer cells in just a few days.

- Reduces cholesterol, normalises blood sugar levels and reduces high blood pressure.

- Extremely rich in antioxidants which neutralise harmful compounds.

- Greatly benefits and protects liver health. Studies from S.Korea have shown that dandelion extract prevented liver damage from excessive intake of alcohol.

- It has diuretic properties (makes you urinate) which flushes out the kidneys and keeps them healthy. Native Americans boiled dandelions in water for kidney health or for heartburn and upset stomachs.

- Supports immune function and helps stop the growth of pathogenic, disease causing bacteria. Another study from Ireland in ‘Phytotherapy Research’ showed that dandelion root is especially effective at combatting ‘Staph’ infections.

- Helps to build strong bones due to the huge amount of calcium and vitamin K. Lowered levels of vitamin K have been linked to an increased risk of fractures and reduced bone density.

- Dandelion extracts protect skin cells and can prevent damage from ultraviolet rays.

- Very high in fibre, especially a soluble type called Inulin, which can also be found in abundance in Elecampane root. LIke Elecampane, Dandelion is also a pre-biotic, which means it provides a food source for the good bacteria in your gut.

Please note:

Whilst there are very few, if any, contraindications indicated for dandelions, always tread carefully if using a new plant on your body. No matter how safe its reputation, until you know you aren’t going to be that one unlucky person to react badly to a plant most people can use without any trouble at all, then go slow, and dose low. At least until you’re sure.
