Motherwort

Whilst we have our own native European Motherwort (Leonurus Cardiaca) Siberian Motherwort (Leonurus Sibericus) is an ancient, biennial, medicinal herb native to Siberia, China, Korea, parts of Europe, Southern Mexico and South America. First documented in the Chinese ’Book of Songs’, written somewhere between 1000 and 500 BC, it is often cited, annecdotally, as being the most ”human friendly” of the Motherwort species, which pretty much all do the same job - treating many women’s reproductive issues, as well as being a nervine and heart tonic to boot. A great herb for those who lack sleep and rest but still need to perform. Hence its name…

- Especially useful as a cardiac tonic, for heart palpitations, anxiety, panic attacks or any stress-in-the-moment situations. So immediate is its effect, many people report that a dropper full of Motherwort tincture has stopped a racing heartbeat in seconds.

- Helps alleviate the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. (See *Please Note section below)

- Amazing herb for female reproductive issues, period pain, toning the uterus, helping with ovarian pain due to PCOS and can reverse delayed menstuation.

- Cooling and hypotensive in its action (lowers blood pressure) and moves the blood.

- Can be dried and smoked as a tobacco substitute, giving a calming, cannabis-like effect. Although, it has been said that Motherwort can be a bit harsher to smoke and is considerably milder in effect than cannabis.

*Please Note:

Whilst Motherwort excels when used for treating female reproductive issues, it should NOT be taken during pregnancy until the last couple of weeks, and even then, only after consultation with your healthcare professional.

Motherwort is known to help with thyroid excess conditions (hyper-thyroidism ) but there is not a lot of data available on how it affects deficient thyroid conditions (hypo-thyroidism). Annecdotal evidence exists to suggest Siberian Motherwort (as opposed to other species) has no negative effect on normal thyroid function. But please be sure to always exercise caution before adding Motherwort (or any herb) to your daily health regimen if you have a thyroid condition. Please consult with your healthcare provider.
